Blog: Next New

Suggest a new type of "new media" that doesn't currently exist. Describe it. A suggestion for a new type of new media can utilize virtual reality. Maybe creating a world that allows people to interact with other people using a avatar that can follow your movements and incorporating social media use within that world. Since currently virtual reality games are becoming more popular, I do not think that this is difficult to achieve in near future. This can also be used for business purposes like, interviewing people with the use of VR.

Wiki So Far

For the Wiki, I am planning on contributing to What is an MMORPG? by adding a game called Onmyoji to Popular MMORPGs. It is described as a MMORPG based in a world of inspired by Japanese mythology. I will be going over the plot, characters, game play, and many other things that you can do within the game. I am also planning to add to the MapleStory section of the same Wiki page. To do so, I would have to do more research on both games to make sure that they are updated with the current information.

Blog: P2P

What is file sharing? What is P2P sharing? What are some examples of P2P file sharing? File sharing is the act of sharing files with another person through the use of the internet. Meanwhile, Peer-to-Peer sharing is the act of distributing and sharing content to others through the use of P2P sharing applications. An example of P2P file sharing would be using BitTorrent to share files and distribute data. BitTorrent allows people to download large files within minutes, but although it is convenient for the users, it negatively affects the actual owners of the content. For example, in the the article The BitTorrent Effect , it talks about illegally distributing movies to people who did not pay for the content. It also talks about BitTorrent's way of sharing and downloading files. "The more files you're willing to share, the faster any individual torrent downloads to your computer", which prevents people from leeching.  Works Cited: Thompson, Clive "The BitTo...

Blog: Privacy

Discuss how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media. Privacy and confidentiality is very important when it comes to our information we share online. Once something is shared on the Internet, it is sometimes difficult to take it away. By sharing your information online, it can lead to your information being stolen. An example would be if a hacker were to steal your account that asks about your pets name, your mother maiden name, etc. It is not difficult to find these things on your social media platform if you are the type of person to share this kind of information. This topic also comes up when inputting personal data on sites, such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and addresses. Companies and websites are not 100% protected, so there is a possibility for a system breach and hackers can steal your data. Sometimes these companies do not put security first, for example in the article Target works on Security-Heavy Credit Cards, After Breach ,...

Blog: Advice

You are hired by Baruch College to use  new media  to improve the College. What are some suggestions you would make using new media? A suggestion that I would make to improve Baruch through the use of new media is to implement it in classes. Similar to this New Media course, it is enjoyable to be able to manage our own blogs, use different new media technologies, and comment on each other work. I feel like if this were to be implemented in other classes, it would be easier for students to communicate and provide feedback to each other.  Another suggestion is for the Baruch community to use a platform that everyone can use to ask questions and get answers, something like a school-wide forum. Having an official forum will give students to ask and receive answers about the school quickly rather than having trouble finding someone to ask in person.  The last suggestion I would make is for Baruch to have a live chat for urgent problems. Sometimes emailing offices...

Creativity and New Media

Image
Minecraft is a platform/game that I foster my creativity. It is a sand-box like game that allows players to create anything they like with the blocks provided. You get to work with other players to build structures and the game allows players to communicate with each other. Maplestory is a MMORPG that takes palace in an virtual world where players can freely travel around the world and interact with each other or NPCs. I would say Maplestory is a form a new media that fosters creativity because it allows you to alter the appearance and abilities of your character. There are many different ways to to be creative within the game. You could also establish relationships with other players. Collaboration plays a big part within the game. In order to defeat difficult bosses, players would have to gather a group of people and work together with them. There is also an community within the game guilds allow players to feel the sense of belonging while also allowing players to make friends o...

HW Creativity

Discuss how new media fosters creativity. New media is  an outlet for people to express themselves and their creativity. It allows people to post and share their creations on the web. New media fosters creativity by bringing together an audience and community of people who enjoy the same things. An example of new media fostering creativity is shown in the article, Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why? . The article talks about people creating posts called mash-ups. These mash-ups are made to be humorous and creative to attract an audience. With companies like Nickelodeon, who allow people to create these video mash-ups, lets people be creative with Nickelodeon characters all they want while having them market their characters. New media allows people to post whatever they want. It can also act as a form of inspiration which motivates people to become more creative in creating their own content.  Works Cited Barnes, Brooks "Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody o...
