Blog vs Wiki
Compare and contrast blogs and wikis. Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world. How can blogs be used for collaboration? Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?
Blogs and wikis are both tools for people to create content that they are interested in and post it online. Major differences between the two are the people who create content on them and the content itself. Usually blogs are managed by an individual or a small group of people. The posts on blogs can be opinionated depending on the person who created the blog and the topic of the blog. Because of that, "blogs are poised to be the next generation opinion editorial page" (Gill). On the other hand, a wiki is "an online encyclopedia that is written and maintained by anybody who feels like it" as stated in the article How to Use Wikis For Business. Wikis are a collection of factual information, but to a certain extent. Since anyone can edit or contribute to wikis, some information can be inaccurate. To combat inaccurate information, some wikis require an experienced contributor to approve any changes that have been made.
The importance of convergence in today's networked world is that it can bring people and information together, creating collaboration. Blogs can be used for collaboration to create a group blog where different users can contribute. Another way blogs can be used for collaboration is by linking other blogs in a blog list. By doing that, it can direct traffic to other blogs that an individual is interested in. Not only does it bring people together, but it also allows effective discussion of opinions from people who might otherwise be disconnected.
Wikis can be utilized in many innovative ways, for example in education. A new way of utilizing wikis can be implementing it more in education. Students can work together to create and contribute to a wiki. That way professors can see who actually contributed what to the project. It can also be used for sharing of information and organization of projects just like how Pagliarulo does with his projects. He uses wikis to store all the information for his project. He then shares it with his team members so they can also contribute and have access to updated information (Locher). I am pretty sure there are many other ways to utilize wikis.
