How does a Twitter discussion compare to a BlackBoard Discussion?

Twitter is a social networking site that allows people to share their thoughts through tweets that are restricted to 280 characters. Twitter discussions usually start with a tweet about anything. Then other users can interact with them by replying, retweeting, and or liking a tweet. And the discussion can go back and forth and many other users can also join in on the discussion. It can be used by anyone and is open to the public. In my opinion, a Twitter discussion and very different from a BlackBoard discussion.

BlackBoard is limited to students who are enrolled in a course that utilizes BlackBoard. It allows professors to share documents and announcements to their students quickly and efficiently. Blackboard also has a discussion board for each other the courses. Usually students posts only for academic purposes. Some examples for starting a discussion would be that they need help with something regarding the class. A difference is that BlackBoard allows students to post with no character restriction.

In-class discussion is also limited to students who are enrolled in a course. It is very different from Twitter discussions and BlackBoard discussions. People might be more comfortable using an online platform to discuss topics. Having to discuss topics in person might stop students from giving their input on a certain topic if it makes them uncomfortable. The similarity between the discussions is that they can all be used as a educational purpose. This New Media course allows students to utilize Twitter and Blackboard.
