Blog: P2P
What is file sharing? What is P2P sharing? What are some examples of P2P file sharing?
File sharing is the act of sharing files with another person through the use of the internet. Meanwhile, Peer-to-Peer sharing is the act of distributing and sharing content to others through the use of P2P sharing applications. An example of P2P file sharing would be using BitTorrent to share files and distribute data. BitTorrent allows people to download large files within minutes, but although it is convenient for the users, it negatively affects the actual owners of the content. For example, in the the article The BitTorrent Effect, it talks about illegally distributing movies to people who did not pay for the content. It also talks about BitTorrent's way of sharing and downloading files. "The more files you're willing to share, the faster any individual torrent downloads to your computer", which prevents people from leeching.

Celina, when I was younger, I did not fully understand the issues of P2P. In fact, it was so common that I began to wonder how the movie and music industry was ever making money for it if people were still able to consume without having to pay. After learning that that is what illegal distribution of content is all about, I began to think about situations in the grey zone. For example, what if certain things were distributed not because people did not want to pay for it, but simply because they did not have the means to. Take expensive textbooks for example.
